The 2024 Kigali Climate Action Summit is ready to combat air pollution! Led by PlanetVanguard, a climate conservation club from African Leadership at University in Kigali, and facilitated by the Global Livingston Institute, this summit will bring together young people from East Africa to discuss climate issues and solutions such as fossil fuels, clean cooking, carbon credits, and electric vehicles.

Kigali Climate Action FIRE Summit 2024
Carbon credits are a significant point of discussion in Rwanda, with the country being a favored location for such endeavors, although their impact has been a subject of debate. Concurrently, the reliance on wood or oil fires for cooking and heating among many Rwandans has resulted in adverse health effects, environmental degradation, and deforestation, prompting a need for effective interventions. Notably, initiatives led by students from the African Leadership University have collaborated with primary schools across Rwanda to advocate for native reforestation. Furthermore, Rwanda’s vehicle landscape primarily consists of aged cars lacking modern environmental standards, often emitting black smoke due to the absence of stringent ownership regulations. Despite governmental efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs), significant obstacles remain to be addressed in their widespread adoption.

About the FIRE Summit
The FIRE Element focuses on rapidly transitioning to renewable energy sources, clean transportation, and accelerating ways to draw down fossil fuel dependence. Targeting the source of these emissions — namely fossil fuels — and doing so equitably, is the goal of the FIRE element. This FIRE Summit is convening Planeteers in communities around the world to develop campaigns to accelerate our transition away from fossil fuels.
